A Look at Dogs and Babies in The Same House
Are you a parent who is bringing a new baby into your home? If you are a new parent, or if you are planning on bringing a baby into your home, there might be a few concerns that you have - especially if you have a dog! Many dog owners are concerned about how to keep their dog and baby happy and healthy under the same roof! The truth is, there are a couple of things that you should know about dogs and babies in the same house. Here are a couple of things that you should know about putting dogs and babies together:
• Make sure the noise level is alright: One of the important things that changes in a home with a new baby is the noise level. Babies need things to be quiet in order to sleep, and sometimes dogs don't quite understand how to be quiet! First of all, you should have your dog be obedience trained (especially responding to verbal commands) so that your dog will know how to be quiet when the baby is asleep. In addition, you should keep your dogs and babies in separate rooms during naptime so that the baby will sleep undisturbed. Finally, if your dog has problems with barking, then this is a noise level that you definitely will need to control! Barking collars can help you to control the barking noise levels around your home if you have a barking problem.
• Sanitation: Even if you keep your dog as clean as can be, sanitation should also be a concern if you have a dog and a baby. You will want to make sure that your baby is not exposed to any germs which the dog may bring into the home. Babies are very delicate creatures, and they are more susceptible to germs and disease. Make sure that your dog does not lick, paw, or stick his wet nose on the baby. This way you will be able to ensure that your baby is healthy!
• Say "no" to nipping: Dogs sometimes don't know how hard their bites are, and you need to make sure that your dog does not nip on your baby and hurt it! Even the little nips or playful bites can really hurt a little baby's tender body. You will want to train your dog to not bite or nip on the baby, which can first be started by not allowing the dog to nip or bite on you. It will be hard for your dog to differentiate between nipping you and the baby at first, so you should just not encourage your dog to nip at all.
• Dogs still need attention: Dogs will still need to get attention and love, even after the baby is born. If not, then your dog will begin to resent the baby and the attention that is taken away from him. One way that you can still give attention and love to your dog is by making sure that you still give it lots of pats, scratches, walks, and play time. In addition, you can make sure that you always give your dog treats while your baby is in the room. This will make your dog associate treats and food with the baby, which will help it to keep happy every time the baby comes around!
As you can see, there are a couple of things that you need to be aware of when you have dogs and babies in the house. Just make sure that everyone is getting the attention that is needed, and that everyone is safe and healthy. This way, you'll be sure to successfully keep both happy dogs and happy babies under your roof!
