Best Flea and Tick Control Methods for Dogs

Controlling fleas and ticks can be exhausting, especially if the owner is using techniques that don't work. The number of methods suggested on the Internet for controlling fleas and ticks is many. Some of the methods out there will not help to control fleas and ticks one bit. However, there are some consistently effective methods for controlling these irritating insects. Here are some of the best flea and tick control methods for dogs.

Healthy Dogs are Happy Dogs

Besides helping their dog live happily, owners that make sure to keep their dogs healthy will also help to control the likelihood of their dog attracting fleas or ticks. Fleas and ticks are attracted to unhealthy animals. Rodents are common hosts for fleas and ticks. By feeding the dog a healthy diet and making sure to properly exercise their dog, owners will make strides for preventing fleas and ticks.

Weekly Baths

Dogs should be given a bath at least weekly. While owners may try and control where their dog ventures off to, the fact is that dogs will get into areas where fleas and ticks might be prevalent. By giving the dog a bath every week, owners will be able to wash away flea eggs. Owners will also be able to take a moment to comb through their dog's fur to look for ticks.

Baths should also be considered more often if dogs with which the family dog associates with have fleas. Just like parents monitor the other children in the neighborhood for chicken pox, strep throat, or head lice, dog owners should monitor the other dogs in the neighborhood that may have fleas or ticks. If their dog plays with those dogs, then they should be bathed every time they associate with the other dogs. This practice will help owners control fleas and ticks.

Dog Safe Chemicals

Owners should research different types of chemicals that can be applied daily, weekly, or monthly in order to kill any fleas or ticks that may venture onto their dog. Chemicals that contain permethrin are generally safe and effective, but this chemical cannot be shipped into certain states. Owners should consult with a veterinarian once they have done their research to ensure that the chemicals they wish to purchase are the best for their dog. Periodic chemical treatments will help owners stay one step ahead of any flea or tick problem.

Spraying and Dusting

One of the best ways to control the flea and tick population in the dog's play yard is to spray or dust. Once again, owners should be sure that the spray or dust is safe for their dog and children. By spraying or dusting the fences, walls, sheds, shrubs, and even the dog's house and bed, owners will help prevent having pesky insects thriving in the dog's area.

Cut Tall Grass and Weeds

Another great method for controlling fleas and ticks is to keep all of the grass and weeds in the yard cut short. Fleas and ticks are able to board a dog when the dog brushes against tall grass or weeds where the critters are living. Besides keeping tall grass and weeds short in the yard, owners should try their best to keep their dog from venturing into fields of tall grass or off of a hiking trail into the plants or trees.

Practicing all of these methods will help owners keep a handle on any flea and tick issues relating to their dog.
