Big Breed Dog Care

When you decide you want to take an animal into your home, there are lots of factors that come into play that will affect your whole family. All of a sudden you have another being living in your home that has demands, needs, and character traits of their own that will add to the joy and misery of your life. Bringing a large dog into your life is a big commitment to take on. Large dog breeds have to be cared for, exercised, and fed just like any child you would have. Before you can truly take on this responsibility with full faith in yourself, you need to know a little bit about big dog breeds and how to care for them before you own one.

First off, big dogs like to play. Anything outside that involves running, toys, and time with you will make your dog happier. Depending on what kind of large dog you have, character traits will decide what kind of activity will be the best to do. For example, Dalmatian dogs are extremely hyper and have a ton of energy all the time. They love to sprint and play with other Dalmatian dogs. If you have a small backyard, these are not the right kind of dog to have. St. Bernard dogs are very large dogs that love to lie around and actually do fairly well in a smaller area. But be careful, they drool. Make sure that the space you have available will be enough for your dog to play in or that you are close enough to a park or field that they can run around in.

Big dogs need to be cleaned often. There are soaps available for dogs that have other things in it that will help ward off insects. However, a hose and regular sponge with regular soap will work just fine. When you give your dog a bath, make it a routine. Try to do it the same way every time so that it isn't a shocking experience each time they are to be cleaned. Some dogs strongly dislike being hosed off while others find it all right. Most dogs need time to get used to how you clean them.

Also, make sure to have your dog's hair trimmed and kept nice. If hair gets out of control, it will get knots and snarls that will be almost impossible to comb out. Get a brush and a comb that you can use on your dog and run it through their hair daily. Besides making sure hair is clean, keeping it sleek and tangle free will improve the appearance of your dog.

Keeping your dog healthy and free from illness all starts with diet and daily activity. Large dogs, when they get older, tend to have weight problems, and it becomes hard for them to exercise. From that point, it's all down hill and they become extremely unhealthy. Keeping your dog active takes some dedication on your part, but also, feeding them the right food will give them the energy they need to accomplish good exercise. Most families don't think that feeding the dog table scraps and spoiling their dog with treats isn't a big deal. The truth is, it causes them to gain weight, and from there, a list of problems will arise such as arthritis, bloating, tiredness, etc. After doing all you can to keep your dog healthy, take the dog to the vet every so often to have a check up. The vet can give you directions on how to care for your dog in more detail according to its specific needs.
