Choosing The Right Dog For Your Lifestyle

There are lots of different kinds of dogs out there, and you will want to make sure that you choose the right dog to fit your lifestyle. By choosing a dog that is right for your lifestyle, you will be able to be happy and content with your dog. If a dog doesn't fit into your lifestyle, caring for the dog might become more of a burden than a fun addition to your family. In addition, choosing the right dog for your lifestyle will also help your pet to be happier and healthier! Here are a couple of things that you can do to choose the right dog for your lifestyle:

• Are you an active person? If you are a person that is always on the go and moving around, then you will want to find a dog that will match the same activity level that you have. For example, if you like to run, you will probably want to get a larger dog that can run with you and keep up with your stride. Many people have found Labradors and Golden Retrievers to be good runners. You will probably not want to get a dog with stubby, short legs (such as a Pit Bull) if you want to go running with your dog.

• Do you have a lot of time to spend with your dog? All dogs love to get affection, but there are some dogs that need more affection than others. If you are a single person that works during the day, you will want to make sure that you get a dog that is alright being alone for long periods of time. Finding dogs like this can sometimes depend on the individual dogs, instead of the breed. However, some people have found that Basset Hounds are dogs that seem to need less time and affection than other dogs.

• Do you travel a lot? Does your lifestyle involve a lot of traveling? If you are interested in traveling with your dog, you will need to take this into consideration right from the get-go. You will want to make sure that you get a dog that will be easy for you to travel with. If you travel a lot by airplane, then you might want to get a smaller dog that will fit into an airline carry-on case. Dachshunds and small Terriers are smaller dogs that might be easier to do air travel with. However, if you travel a lot in your car, you will have more flexibility to get a slightly larger dog (it really depends on the size of your car!).

• Do you have time for dog care? If you are a really busy person, then you will want a dog that is more low maintenance. For example, if you are busy you will not want a dog that has long fur and needs a lot of grooming. Instead, you will want a short haired dog that will not need as much brushing and care. Think about how much time you have to take care of your future dog, and then get a dog that you will be able to take care of!

As you can see, there are a lot of things that you should take into consideration when choosing the right dog for your lifestyle. If you have specific questions about your lifestyle and the type of dog you are interested in, you can contact a dog breeder or look in a book that is about the type of dog you would like to get. You also can find more information about specific dogs and their maintenance online, to help you figure out if the dog will fit into your lifestyle!
