Dog Barking Basics
It's natural for dogs to bark occasionally for different reasons. Nevertheless, if your dog barks excessively, you may very well be at the center of this type of behavior. As you may know, dogs like being in company of humans, animals or sometimes both. If you neglect your dog and confine him to a specific spot in the yard for extended amounts of time, it's very likely that your dog will get bored very quickly due to the lack of attention. Generally, dogs that are confined for a long period of time will take up barking in a flash as one of his main hobbies to try to get the much needed attention they long for. Dogs are very social and truly like being in the company of humans or of other animals. They also require sufficient daily exercise to expend that excess energy in them. A confined dog is subject to develop some type of dog behavior issues like excessive barking, howling, whining, aggression, chewing, digging holes and plenty more destructive behaviors. If you recognize that you have been neglecting your dog all this time, it's probably not too late to correct the barking behavior by simply trying your best to improve your attitude towards your dog. It's best that you take care of the matter now before it becomes too much for you to manage later. Spend some quality time with your dog. Take him on daily walks around your neighborhood, and if you can, go to the park every other week. This is a great opportunity for your dog not only to bond with you but also to socialize with other dogs and people as well. You can be creative and come up with some fun games that involve different levels of your dog's skills and abilities to fetch, catch, roll over, run and jump. Make this moment an enjoyable time for both of you.
If you have a dog that barks immensely, make sure to act quickly to stop this unacceptable behavior before it becomes a nuisance to your neighbors. It's in your best interest to find some time to train your dog to stop barking whether you are at home or away for work. Make sure that you constantly praise and reward your dog every time he follows your command to stop barking. When you are home, observe the things that make your dog bark. If it's the doorbell or knocking on the door, try to grab his muzzle next time he barks and firmly tell him to "quiet" or use a leash to grab him and again with a firm tone and say "quiet". After he follows your command, massage his body to calm him down then praise and reward him for good barking behavior.
Don't punish your dog severely for barking or abuse him in any way for barking. Find ways to train your dog to respond to you quickly without severe punishments. You can use what you have to start training your dog. You can use a dog leash to control and make corrections whenever your dog barks. You can look into buying some type of anti-barking collars available in any of your local pet stores. Avoid buying the shocking collar just because it's not humane and can be dangerous. You may choose the ones that spray water or citrus water for the purpose of controlling your dog from barking. If the barking continues, seek a professional dog trainer.
Make sure that your dog's needs are well taken care of before leaving your house. Make sure that he is comfortable where he is. Sometimes, you may think of having the radio or the television on to give him the illusion that he is not alone.
