Dog Breeds for Families Series: Easy to Train Dogs
When a family with small children is looking for the right breed of dog for their pet, there are better breeds than others. There are a lot of sizes; toy, small, medium, and large dogs. Within the size category each dog varies in temperament. Even within the same breed dogs can differ in personality. To make sure small children will be safe; parents need to have the dog they choose trained. Parents can send the dog to a professional or train the dog at home. All dogs need to be trained so that they will be the best dog they can be. Because of their different temperaments, some dogs are more easily trained than others, possibly making them a better choice for families with small children.
Labrador Retriever
Labrador Retrievers are one of the most popular breeds of dog in the world. These dogs are used for a variety of jobs from assisting police officers to helping those with disabilities. Labs come in yellow, chocolate, or black. The males can weigh between sixty and eighty lbs with a height between twenty two and twenty five inches. A female Labrador's height can be twenty one to twenty four inches and they can weigh between fifty five and seventy lbs. Their average lifespan is usually ten to thirteen years. Labs make great family dogs because they are very gentle and good natured. Because they are very smart they can easily be trained. Labradors are obedient, energetic, and talented. Children could have a great time teaching their Lab tricks.
Collie
There are quite a few different types of Collies. The Rough Collie is probably the type that most people think of when they think of Collies. A few others include the Border Collie, the Smooth Collie, and the Bearded Collie. Rough Collies come in different colors, black tricolour, pale sable, and blue merle. Collies also come in different sizes. Female Collies can weigh between thirty five and sixty five lbs and stand somewhere between nineteen and twenty six inches tall. Male Collies usually weigh between forty five and seventy five lbs with a height of about twenty two to twenty six inches. Collies are very friendly and loyal to their owners. Because they are so intelligent they learn quickly and can very easily be trained.
Golden Retriever
Golden Retrievers are very friendly and patient dogs. This breed is used as guide dogs, hunting dogs, search and rescue dogs, and they are also very popular family dogs. There are British and American type Golden Retrievers. The main difference between these dogs is the size. American males are usually about twenty two to twenty four inches high at the shoulders with the females at about twenty one and a half to twenty two and a half inches. Male Golden Retrievers weight between sixty to eighty lbs and females at fifty five to seventy lbs. Golden Retrievers are friendly to their owners as well as to strangers. They are very calm, trusting dogs. They are very intelligent and can learn over 200 commands. They are also very patient with children.
Poodle
There are several types of Poodles: standard, miniature, and toy. The Standard Poodle is the type that tends to be best with children. Poodles don't shed because they have curly, dense hair instead of fur. They come in a variety of colors, most being a solid color, but some being parti-colored with large patches. Standard Poodles are very active and energetic. They are very eager to please and like to play fetch. Because they are very intelligent they are easy to train making them a great family dog.
