Dog Grooming Basics

When you have a dog, it is just like having a baby. You have to take care of it or it will be unhealthy, look and smell gross. Grooming a dog can be really annoying and hard. Grooming a dog doesn't just mean giving him a bath. You also need to clean his teeth, his ears, his eyes, and trim his nails and hair. Here are some tips for grooming a dog.

If you are going to trim his hair, do that before you give him a bath. Just like when you give your kids a haircut, you don't want them to go around with hair all over them. Let them rinse off in the tub. Let your dog do the same. Don't try to give him the most stylish haircut in the world. Remember, he's just a dog, not a model. You will save yourself a lot of grief by just giving him a simple haircut. Give him something that is light during the summer and will keep him warm during the winter. If you think you might cut off too much, start off small and then cut more off next time.

Buy your dog his own doggy toothbrush. There are pet stores everywhere, so just buy a toothbrush from them. Your dog needs to have the same care for his teeth as you would for yours. You don't have to brush them everyday, but at least every time you groom him. Also, buy some treats or bones that will help his teeth and keep them strong and healthy.

When you are cleaning the eyes, make sure that you get a product that will help you. It depends on the type of dog that you have, but get something that will remove everything from the corner of your dog's eyes.

When you are cleaning your dog's ears, you will also need to buy a cleaner. Your dog shouldn't have much wax, if any in his ears, and should have no smell to them at all. Many times these parts are forgotten by a person grooming their dog. They are very important to help prevent ear infections or too much wax build-up.

You will need to cut your dog's nails. They shouldn't be cut an extreme amount, but very little. They need to be kept short to avoid them obviously getting too long and being in the way, but also to avoid being harmful to the owner's or any children. Use a pair of dog clippers to protect the safety of your dog. Just start out by cutting a little tiny bit off, and if you need to cut off more, then go ahead after you check to make sure that you really do need to cut it off more.

Give your dog a bath. He will need it a lot. Just use a bath tub in your house, and clean it after. If you don't want to use a tub, you can buy a kiddie pool and bathe him in there. Do not use shampoo that you would normally use on yourself. Buy the special kind for dogs.

Grooming your dog is very important. Make sure that you really stay on top of things and keep your dog healthy and well groomed. Dogs that aren't groomed much smell horrible and really make the home worse.
