Dog Treats for Dog Breath

Most dogs don't have the freshest breath on the planet. Dogs do not have the luxury of brushing their teeth or gargling with Listerine. If you are a dog owner, you have a responsibility to take care of your pet and this includes brushing their teeth. This will help to improve their teeth and bad breath. The food your dog eats impacts how his breath smells. If your dog has bad breath, here are a couple recipes to help you banish his bad breath.

The Bad Breath Banishers

Ingredients:

2 C. Brown rice flour
1 T. activated charcoal (found at a drugstore)
3 T. Canola oil
1 Egg
½ C. chopped fresh mint
½ C. chopped fresh parsley
2/3 C. Low fat milk

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Lightly oil and flour a cookie sheet. Combine flour and charcoal. Combine all the other ingredients until through ally blended. Drop teaspoonfuls onto oiled cookie sheet about one inch apart. Bake 15 to 20 minutes. Allow them to cool and store in airtight container in the fridge.

Breath Bustin' Biscuits

Ingredients:

1 ½ C. whole wheat flour
1 ½ C. Bisquick® baking mix
½ C. mint leaves -- loosely packed
¼ C. milk
4 tablespoons margarine
1 egg
1 ½ tablespoons maple syrup or corn syrup

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Combine all the ingredients in a food processor and process until everything is well-blended. Everything in the food processor needs to be well mixed, check the mint to make sure it is chopped. The mixture should form into a large ball. Press or roll the mixture onto a non-stick surface. Roll the dough to be ¼ to ½ inch thick. You will then cut into 1x2 inch strips or use the cookie cutter and place the cut outs on the cookie sheet. Bake the biscuits for at least 20 minutes or until they are lightly browned. Allow the cookies to cool and then store them in an air tight container in the fridge. This recipe yields about 30 medium biscuits.

Barley Beef Biscuits

Ingredients:

½ C. Extra Virgin Olive Oil
4 T Parsley
2 C. Beef broth
2 C. Barley flour
3-4 C. Rye flour

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, combine olive oil and parsley. Heat the beef broth or water until it is steaming and add it to the olive oil mixture. Stir in barley flour and let cool until lukewarm. Slowly blend in rye flour, adding enough to form a stiff dough.

Place the dough on a flat surface and knead it until it is smooth. Shape the dough into a ball and roll it to be ¼ inch thick. Now you will need to cut out biscuits from the dough. Use your cookie cutters to get the biscuits cut and transfer them to an ungreased baking sheet, leaving about ¼ inch in between each. Use the scraps for more biscuits.

Bake for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and turn over and bake for an additional 30 minutes, or until golden brown on both sides. After you finish baking all batches of biscuits, turn off the oven, spread all the biscuits in one baking pan and set them in the oven to cool for a few hours or overnight. The extra time in the oven as it cools off helps make the treats crunchier. This recipe yields 2 dozen biscuits.

If your dog's breath is still an issue even with the new biscuits, consult your vet. Your dog could have a large plaque build up that is causing the bad breath. There are dog toothbrushes and toothpastes that you can use to help reduce your dog's bad breath.
