Ensuring Good Nutrition For Your Dog

When getting a new dog, most people feel a lot of responsibility and concern about the dog's diet. This is a natural concern, since dog owners are the people who are responsible for the feeding and nurturing of their dog. There are a couple of things that you can do to make sure that your dog has a good diet and nutrition. Here they are:

Pick a good type of dog food: A lot of people do not realize that there is a large difference between different brands of dog food. Usually dog food brands that you find in the grocery store will not have the high quality nutrients to ensure that you dog has a good diet. Iams is the one exception to this rule – it is a high quality dog food that recently began to be sold in grocery stores. Generally however, you will want to try and find a high quality dog food at a pet store instead of the grocery store. Along with Iams, other quality forms of dog food can be found in the brands Eukanuba, Science Diet, and Nutro. Brands of dog food that you should avoid are: Alpo, Pedigree, Kibbles ‘n Bits, Beneful, and Pro Plan.

Give your dog the correct amount of food: You will want to make sure that you give your dog the correct amount of dog food that it needs each day. The instructions for feeding your dog will be found on the back of the dog food package that you buy. Usually the amount listed is found in "cups. Be very careful when measuring out your dog food in "cups – the "cup refers to the measuring cup size, which is generally about 8 ounces. Using another type of cup for measuring (such as a coffee mug, which holds about 12 ounces) can mess up your dog's healthy diet.

Do not use an automatic dispenser: One of the best ways that you can ensure your dog has a good diet and nutrition is to make sure that you feed your dog the correct amount each day. Do not rely on an automatic dispenser to feed your dog because your dog will probably end up overeating. Above all, make sure that you control the amount of dog food that your dog eats!

Do not feed your dog table scraps: There are a couple reasons why you should not feed your dog table scraps, and the most important reason is that your dog will not eat a healthy, good diet. Table scraps do not contain all of the nutrients that a dog needs – instead, they are more like empty calories. Dogs that eat a lot of table scraps often end up becoming overweight. Don't do that to your dog – instead, eat all of the food that's on your plate!

Give your dog steamed vegetables occasionally: Although you shouldn't feed your dog table scraps, it isn't a bad idea to occasionally mix steamed vegetables in with your dog's dog food. Some people have found that steamed vegetables are really good for their dog, and it helps to give them a glossy coat. In addition, steamed vegetables can give some added nutrients and vitamins for your dog.

There are many ways that you can ensure that your dog has a good diet and nutrition. If you have questions about what type of quality dog food to purchase for your dog, you should ask your veterinarian or a dog specialist at your local pet store. Choosing the right type of dog food to ensure good nutrition for your pet might be one of the most important decisions you make about your dog's health!
