Having a healthy puppy is very important for the happiness of you and your puppy. How to ensure your puppy is healthy can be done by following these suggestions.

1. Know what shots your puppy needs and when.
2. Keep your puppy clean and groomed.
3. Make sure your puppy gets the exercise he or she needs.

When you get a new puppy you will need to get some shots to help ensure your puppy's health is what it should be. Look into getting a vet you and your puppy are comfortable with, if you do not already have one. Then check with your vet to make sure you get the right vaccines for your puppy. There are multi vaccine shots that are available for your puppy's health like the 'Six in One'. This is nice so you don't have to go back to the vet six times. Although you will need to get four of these combination shots.

So what shots do you need? To ensure your puppy is healthy start at six or seven weeks old and go get the first combination shot. Then when your puppy is nine weeks old get the second combination shot. When your puppy is twelve weeks old get him or her the third combination shot and a LYME vaccine if your vet says you need this one for your puppy. If you get a LYME vaccine, you will need to get another in two weeks and then a booster once a year after that. The fourth and last combination shot will need to be given at sixteen weeks.

When your puppy is twelve to sixteen weeks old you will need to get a rabies shot. There are state and local laws regarding rabies shots, but mostly they are required at least every two years. Talk to your vet and see what the requirements are for your area. You will most likely need to get boosters for your puppy one year after the first shot and then throughout his or her life.
