Grooming A Large Dog Step by Step
Grooming a dog is a huge task. Especially when it is a huge dog. However, it can still be done. Here are some ideas for how to groom a large dog.
Put your dog in a different collar. A normal wet collar will bleed and will leave sores on your dog's neck when he is dry and the collar is still wet. You can buy special ones that don't bleed and that also won't hurt your dog when the collar is wet.
Put on the dog's leash. Your dog is big and will probably want to get away. Have the leash on them so that if your dog starts to run away, you will be able to stop him before he runs through the house or the yard.
Brush your dog's teeth. You will need a special brush or hand cover that helps you brush your dog's teeth. You will also need special toothpaste for dogs. You cannot use normal toothpaste on dogs because it can seriously harm them.
Clean your dog's eyes. The older a dog gets, the more gunk and gross their eyes get over time. You need to buy a special cleaning solution for your dog's eyes. The solution will help to get rid of the gunk and will help your dog's eyes look better. Be careful around the eyes.
You also have to clean out your dog's ears. Wax builds up and has to be cleaned out. Again, use a cleaning solution to help clean them out. Also use a cotton ball and not a q-tip. Q-tips are too small and will harm your dog.
Nails are parts of our body that always grow. You have to cut your dog's because they grow constantly too. Use special dog nail cutters so that you don't hurt your dog. Since you have a big dog, you won't be able to use smaller human ones. Make sure you don't cut into the pink part of the nail. If the nail starts bleeding, put some corn starch on it and put pressure on the spot that's bleeding. If the bleeding doesn't stop, call or go immediately to the vet.
Brush all the knots out of your dog's hair. Most large dog's have tons of hair, that if isn't short gets very tangled. Use a rake to comb through it and get out any dirt or loose hair that wasn't picked up by the comb.
Using dog scissors, cut your dog's hair. You will probably want to use a smaller leash or have someone help you hold your dog. Your dog's hair needs to be cut and you can't just take guesses. You need him to sit still. If it helps, spray his hair with water so that it is easier to manage. After you are done, brush your dog's hair again.
Give your dog a bath. Human shampoo really harms dogs so use a special dog shampoo. Be careful around certain sensitive areas and make sure that you are getting everywhere. If your dog has lots of hair, really rub in the soap. Dry him off completely. Don't use a human blow dryer but buy a dog one so that you don't burn your dog with a human one. The human blow dryers are very dangerous for dogs and also take much longer to blow dry a dog's hair.
Give your dog a treat when you are done grooming him. You need to reward him for the hard work he has done in sitting still. Also, make sure that you use dog products and not human ones. Dog's are very sensitive, even the large ones. They can be hurt really bad by things that aren't made for them.
