Healthy Dog Treats from Scratch

If you like to make dog treats for your dog, you have probably tried several different kinds of homemade dog treats. Like humans, dogs need healthy treats to keep them at their peak performance level. Here are some healthy dog treats you can make out of your kitchen:

Healthy Dog Snacks

Ingredients:

1 ¾ C. plain flour
2 tsp toasted wheat germ
½ C. brown sugar
¼ C. sesame seeds
Rind of 1 lemon
12 tsp butter or margarine
½ C. ground walnuts
½ tsp vanilla extract

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. In a large mixing bowl, combine all the ingredients until they are thoroughly mixed. Knead the dough to make sure it is blended. Divide the dough into 6 parts. Wrap the dough in wax paper and freeze it. When you want the dough to make snacks, remove it from the freezer and allow it thaw. Slice the dough into ½ inch thick slices. Place the cookies on an ungreased cookie pan and bake for 12 minutes. This recipe yields 6-8 cookies per roll.

Veggie Bones

Ingredients:

3 C. minced parsley
¼ C. carrots, chopped very fine
¼ C. shredded mozzarella or parmesan cheese
2 T. olive oil
2 ¾ C. Whole wheat flour
2 T. bran
2 tsp baking powder
½ to 1 cup of water

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and make sure the rack is on the middle level. Lightly grease a large baking sheet. Combine the parsley, carrots, cheese, and oil. Combine all the dry ingredients and add it to the veggies. Slowly add ½ C. of water to the mixture and mix it well. You want a nice moist, but not wet, dough. If the dough is a little too firm, add a little more water to it. Knead the dough for one minute. Roll the dough out on a flat surface until it is ½ inch thick. Use a cookie cutter or a glass to cut out shapes from the dough. Transfer the shapes to the baking sheet and place it in the oven for 20 to 30 minutes or until the biscuits have browned. Place the biscuits on cooling racks to speed up the cooling process.

Vegetarian Dog Biscuits

Ingredients:

2 ½ C. flour
¾ C. dry milk powder
½ C. vegetable oil
2 tbs. brown sugar
2 vegetable bouillon cubes; dissolved in
¾ C. boiling water
½ C. carrots (optional)
1 egg

Preheat the oven to 300 degrees. Mix all ingredients into a ball and roll out to be ¼ inch thick. Cut with bone-shaped cookie cutter, or strips, or a cutter shape of your own choice. Place on ungreased cookie sheet and bake 30 minutes. Allow the biscuits to cool for at least 20 minutes before feeding them to your dog. Seal up the other biscuits and place them in the fridge to keep them fresh.

Liver Drops

Ingredients:

1 C. flour
1 C. Cornmeal
½ C. wheat germ
1 tsp. Garlic powder
1 Pound raw liver (chicken or beef)

Liquefy the liver in the blender. Add all the dry ingredients to the mixture. Drop teaspoonful measurements of the mixture onto a greased cookie sheet. Flatten the treats with the bottom of a glass that is dipped in water and cornmeal. Bake the treats at 350 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes. Allow the treats to cool and store them in an airtight container in the fridge.
