Popular Names For Dogs That Are Fitting
You want to name your dog something that reflects his or her characteristics. However, you don't want to name your dog something that is so zany that it doesn't make a good dog name. Some names are just not appropriate to be yelling out at the dog park (you can use your own imagination about these names) other names are perfectly fitting but they are too long or cumbersome to make a good name (for example, I have a friend with a dog named Squirrel Chaser). In this article, I will try to offer some suggestions for dog names that are both popular and fitting.
Dominant boy dogs—if you have a dominant boy dog, you might consider a strong or powerful name like Thor, Zeus, Rocky, or Bear. There are some names that are popular but have a negative connotation; these names include Fang and Killer. You might want to avoid these names, if you ever end up in court with your dog, Killer, you might expect an unsympathetic judge.
Dominant girl dogs—Tuff little girl dogs might get a name such as Bossy, Xena, Sassy or Queenie. Of course, there are plenty of gender-neutral names that you might select for your dominant girl dog: Tuffy could work for either gender and so could Rowdy.
Dogs of color—there are plenty of popular names that fit a dog based on its color. The names Blacky, Whitey, Blue and Brownie have been popular for years and they are still used today. Some of the most popular names of today are related to the dog's color. These include, Rusty, Coco, Shadow, and Sandy. Besides color, some popular dog names are based on other features of the dog's coat. Spot has been a traditional dog name for dogs with spots (think Dalmatians) and Socks has been a traditional dog name for dogs with socks. Particularly fluffy dogs might be named Fluffy, dogs with dots on their coats might be named Dot, and dogs with masks might be named Bandit. Look through a list of popular dog names and see if any of those names match the physical characteristics of your dog.
Peppy dogs—some dogs are just more playful than others, if your dog is a bundle of energy, you might consider one of the popular names that reflect their energy level. Names like Sparky, Boomer, Bomber, Rascal, and Moxie are descriptive of high-energy dogs.
Mellow dogs—other dogs are a little more content than the Sparkies and the Rascals. These girl dogs might have names like Angel, Princess, and Lady. Boy dogs that are calm and peaceful might make good Buddies or Teddies, both popular names that fit more mellow dogs.
Names based on breed—there are some classic names for different breeds of dogs. A popular name for a collie is Lassie and a popular name for a yellow lab is Old Yeller. If you have a dog that is associated with some dog from fiction, you might think about using that name. One of the most famous beagles is Snoopy, and the hound dogs made famous by the book "Where the Red Fern Grows are Old Dan and Little Anne. Think about any famous dog from the same breed and consider using that name to name your dog.
The other place to find popular but fitting names is to look at popular culture and history. Think of an attribute of your dog and try to find a character that embodies that characteristic. For example, you might have an extremely athletic dog, consider Bo (for Bo Jackson) or your dog might be a troublemaker, consider Loki. If your dog is an escape artist, try out Houdini.
