Pugs
Pugs are among the toy dog breed; wrinkly face and medium size body. The pups are sometimes called puglets. The actual name for the dog "pug" is thought to have come from the English word "pug" which means "playful little devil or monkey." They are known well because their big personalities are packed tightly into such small bodies.
Appearance
Pugs have a square thick and stocky body. They usually weigh between thirteen and twenty pounds and measure between twelve and fourteen inches in height. Their coat is short and soft and depending on the dog they can be in color apricot, fawn, black and silver. Though during the eighteenth century the Pug was shaped somewhat differently; leaner, today standards call for a square compact body.
As already stated, their coats can be fawn, apricot, silver, or black. Some silver colored pugs have been called "smutty" pugs by unscrupulous breeders. These dogs shed throughout the year so if you're allergic and they may not be the best choice for you. There are however special shampoos you can use to help solve the problem with shedding, along with a supplementing or changing the diet, and even keeping the coat trimmed. The black and fawn colored pugs are the most common color in the United States.
A word about the health of Pugs
If you look at a Pug closely you will notice that they lack the long snout that most dogs have. They also lack a skeletal brow ridge which can make them more susceptible to eye injuries. They can easily puncture or scratch their corneas because there is not protection.
Pugs also have very compact breathing passageways that can cause potential breathing problems and the ability to keep their temperature constant. It may not seem like a serious problem but it can lead to injury and often death if they are left in hot locations without a way to cool off properly. They can also be prone to obesity although with the proper diet and regular exercise this can be naturally avoided.
There are also some chronic conditions that Pugs can suffer from. Granulomatous meningoecephalitis which is an inflammation of the brain is one of those chronic conditions. No one knows what causes it and there is no known cure for it although it is believed that it might be inherited. They are also prone to hemivertebrae which occurs in the spinal area cause severe paralysis.
Pug Personalities
Pugs have a stern look on their face most of the time but in truth they are extremely sociable dogs. They can be stubborn about specific things but for the most part very charming, and clever. Unlike some dogs, Pugs are very sensitive to the sound of human voice so it is unusual to have to use harsh punishment. They will usually get along with other dogs and pets but prefer the company of their master and other humans. If they don't get enough attention or the right kind of attention they can become annoyed and may act out a little.
Pugs can make great pets for individuals who have the time to give to them. Although they have some healthy issues, they are attentive and loyal dogs to have around the house. If they are well taken care of and give enough attention they can make great pets.
