Qualities of a Good Dog Breeder

Sometimes it can be difficult to tell the difference between a good dog breeder and a bad one. When you're searching for that perfect dog that fits with you and your family it's important to find a good dog breeder to help make a good fit. If you're worried about getting a healthy, happy, puppy then you want to choose a dog breeder who knows what they're doing. Here are some qualities of a good dog breeder.

1. A good dog breeder will only breed a few types of dogs at a time and will be very knowledgeable about the breeds of dogs they are raising. This might not seem that important but the number of breeds they are raising can make a big difference in how the dog is taken care of. Some dog breeders run what are commonly known as "puppy mills." The goal obviously in this type of breeding place is not to produce healthy puppies; it is to make money. You can run into several different health problems when you get a dog from this type of place.

2. Another good quality of a good dog breeder is that they will be very inquisitive. They will ask you a series of questions, have you fill out an application before buying, and will make you sign a contract after you have found a puppy you like. A good dog breeder will ask you questions to make sure that you are a right fit for the dog and many will have you sign a contract before you take it home. A truly responsible breeder's contract will protect all parties and allow you to return with the puppy at any for any reason.

3. A good dog breeder will have an upstanding reputation within the local community and will be trusted. Vets, groomers, and pet owners will more than likely know who they are and will be more than willing to send you to them. They will usually be registered as a breeder with the local and or national breed registries as well as with the Kennel Club.

4. The way a dog breeder interacts with the dogs they are breeding speaks volumes as to what kind of breeder they are. Human contact is vital so look for a breeder that is very hands-on with the puppies and allows them to run around outside and play. Puppies need to socialize and train in a large space in order to grow and be healthy. A good dog breeder will interact well with the puppies and actually know them by name.

5. Another quality in a good dog breeder is that they will be open to you asking them questions and be as honest as they can about answering them. They will let you take a tour of their facility, interact with the puppies, and just be a part of their breeding grounds. They should be friendly but not timid about telling you whether or not the dog of your choice will fit with your lifestyle.

Some things to look for in a good dog breeder are:

· They focus their efforts on one or two breeds
· They won't allow puppies to leave the mother until they're nine weeks old
· They charge fair prices; be wary of breeders with bargain prices

The most important qualities in a good dog breeder are trustworthy, honest, and a love for the breeds they are breeding. Finding a good dog breeder is possible if you do all your homework and take some of the previous suggestions.
