Shetland Sheepdog

Shetland Sheepdogs are a breed of dog that can also be known as a Sheltie. The Shetland Sheepdog was bred in Scotland for the purpose of being a sheep herder or guarding the sheep for their master. These dogs have earned the name Shetland sheepdog not only for the guarding and herding of the sheep and also because they were bred specifically for the terrain of the Shetland Islands in Scotland. Shetland Sheepdogs can also be known as a Mini Lassie because of their resemblance to the Collie breed. Shetland Sheepdogs are thought to be one of the brightest of all dog breeds.

Shetland Sheepdogs are considered a medium sized dog and can live for an average of fifteen years. They can be anywhere from ten to forty pounds and an average height of thirteen to sixteen inches. They have almond shaped eyes and small ears that are tipped at the top. The color of Shetland Sheepdogs can vary but the most common colors are sable and white, the tri-color of tan, white and brown and a merle color which is made of grey, white, black and tan colors. The size and color of the Shetland Sheepdogs can be more strict when these dogs are used for competition or as show dogs.

The fur of a Shetland Sheepdog is a double coat which means they have two types of fur that make up their coat. The bottom layer is a soft and thick undercoat which is covered by the long and rough guard hair for the top layer. The top layer of long and rough guard hair is water-repellent and the soft, thick undercoat provides relief from hot and cold temperatures that the Shetland Sheepdog can encounter. This type of fur is great for the dog who is to guard and herd sheep in the Islands of Scotland. The fur should be brushed weekly with regular cuts to keep the fur well maintained.

The Shetland Sheepdog is one of the best companion dogs and they are fiercely loyal. Shetland Sheepdogs are also easily trainable, lively, and intelligent. The Shetland Sheepdog is also very willing to please and obey their masters. Shelties, as they are often called are a loving, loyal, and affectionate breed of dog. Shelties may not like to be petted by people they do not know so it is best to be socialized extensively with others. Shetland Sheepdogs are excellent family pets and are wonderful with children if raised with them from a young age.

Shetland Sheepdogs have a very strong herding instinct. These dogs love to chase and herd just about anything including squirrels and ducks. Shetland Sheepdogs have even been known to "herd" people or children into groups by barking and nipping at heels. Shetland Sheepdogs love wide areas that are open to run around in. A Shetland sheepdog loves to play and needs to have a sensitive and firm owner. These dogs like to be kept busy.

Health problems that can occur with your Shetland Sheepdog are mostly in association with their eyes as a malformation or disease. These diseases are Collie eye anomaly and progressive retinal atrophy. The Shetland sheepdog is also susceptible to hypothyroidism, epilepsy, hip dysplasia and skin allergies. They can also inherit a bleeding disorder called Von Willebrand disease.

The Shetland sheepdog is a result of the intermingling of border collies in breeding. The year 1909 saw the official recognition of the Shetland sheepdog by the English Kennel Club. Although the Shetland sheepdog originated from the Shetland Islands it is ironically rarely found there today. A Shetland sheepdog is a loyal companion for anyone and is great for children when acquired as a puppy.
