Sit! Stay! Dog Training Tips

Do you want to train your dog but you just aren't sure where to begin? If you are feeling this way, don't worry. You are not alone! There are a lot of people who want to learn how to train their dog. Training your dog creates a special bond of love and respect between the dog and its owner. Here are a couple of tips for dog training:

Always reward good behavior: As you are going about training your dog, you will want to make sure that you always reward good behavior and obedience. By rewarding good behavior, dogs will be able to learn quickly and see what you want them to do. Dogs are really smart animals, and it won't take them long to figure out what they can do to get a reward! There are many different ways that you can choose to reward your dog. Some of the most common ways to reward dogs are through small treats, verbal praise, a scratch behind the ears, a scratch on the tummy, or a pat on the head. You can decide whatever type of good behavior you think will be most effective for training your dog.

Never hurt your dog: It is easy to get frustrated while trying to train your dog, and it may make you feel like hitting or hurting the dog. However, you first should realize that the dog probably doesn't understand what you are trying to have him do. This might not be a problem of willful disobedience on your dog's part, but rather a miscommunication between you and your dog. Secondly, you should never hit an animal. Animal cruelty is not only morally wrong, but there are also laws which protect animals from cruel behavior. If you feel like hitting or hurting your dog in any way during the training process, you should take a break. Take some time away from the animal and cool down. If you have lots of problems controlling your anger while you are training your dog, then you should have someone else train your dog instead.

Repetition is the key: When you are training your dog to do anything, you will need to make sure that you repeat things over and over. Just like humans learn from repetition, dogs are the same way! For example, when you are teaching your dog "to sit," you will constantly need to push down the rump of your dog to the floor, while saying the command "SIT." In addition, you will constantly need to be pulling your dog back to your side and say "HEEL" when you are trying to teach them to walk beside you. It is likely that you will need to exercise a lot of patience while you repeat steps over and over with your dog. However, your hard work will eventually reap results.

There are dog training devices available: If you are interested, there are many types of dog training devices that can help you to train your dog. For example, there are chain choke collars which you can purchase to help you to teach your dog how to heel. Dog bark collars can help train your dog to stop barking. Training pads can help you to housetrain your little puppy! There are also bitter tasting sprays which can help you to train your dog not to chew on things! If you ever are at a loss for how to train your dog to do something, visit your local pet store and see if there are any dog training devices to help you out. Chances are, there probably is something at the pet store for you...er, your dog!
