Small Dog Breeding Hints
Breeding small dogs is something that can be done to start a lucrative business or a cheaper way of getting the exact kind of dog that you want. Many people are looking for new and interesting hybrid dogs to breed so that they can have a dog that no one else has. No matter the reason, breeding small breed dogs takes some know-how to do it properly.
First of all, know what kind of dog you are trying to breed. Learn as much as you can about the dog, its different personality traits, and what kind of environment it needs to live in. When you have learned these things, you will be able to breed a dog that will work well in the area that you live in. Whether the dog is for you of for your customers, it is good to have a dog that can be the happiest in the climate that you live in.
Second, if you are breeding a hybrid dog, make sure that the dog you are trying to create mixes well with the two parent breeds. You don't want to accidentally mix a Schi tzu dog with a Bulldog and end up with a Bullschi..... well you understand my point. Some dogs don't mix well and will create a dog with odd physical features that actually cause health problems as they get older. Some dogs mixed together, however, create new breeds that are great and fun to have. For example, if you mix a German Shepard and a Black Lab together, you get a mix that has the brains of a Lab but the size of a German Shepard. Try studying up on what people have mixed together in the past and see what has been successful and what hasn't been so successful.
Third, if you are breeding animals to sell, make sure that you are doing it legally. Different counties and cities have different sets of laws concerning what people can and can't breed. For example, many cities do not allow people to own Doberman Pinchers within city neighborhoods. Also, some states have licenses that breeders have to pay for and paperwork to fill out to register themselves as official dog breeding kennels.
Fourth, make sure that the homes these dogs are going into are good ones. Talk to the potential owners and ask a little about what their plans are and why they want this animal. If they seem to have strong reasons and long term plans that sound good, then it should be ok to sell them the small puppy. If they for some reason don't seem capable of taking care of the animal, you don't have to sell them anything. For example, after the movie "101 Dalmatians came out about ten years ago, there was a spike in the market for Dalmatian puppies. Most people who went out and bought them because they are extremely cute when they are puppies. What a lot of people failed to realize is that these animals grow up to be hyper and full of energy. A lot of people had not planned to have an animal with this kind of behavior. Small dogs are sought after so much because of their energy and size. They are small and easier to keep contained in a residential area.
Breeding small dogs can be a satisfying way to start a business that makes people happy. Finding people who want dogs or just need a companion to be with them in their old age can actually help a person's health, emotionally and even physically. People will continue to breed small dogs because they are fun to have around and make everyday time together memorable.
