Tasty Dog Treats from Scratch

When you sit down to a nice chocolate brownie, your dog is probably close-by hoping you will drop your brownie so they can get a piece. Never allow yourself to give in to the cute face of your dog. The chemicals in chocolate can greatly impact your dog and cause him to be sick and possibly die from complications. If you still want to give your dog something to eat while you scarf down your brownie, you can make tasty dog treats for him. Here are a couple tasty dog treats:

Liver Bow-wownies

Ingredients:

2 lbs chicken livers
2 C corn meal
2 C wheat germ
2 eggs
2 1/2 tsp. granulated garlic (not salt)
1/2 C dried parsley

Liquefy livers in food processor, and pour into mixing bowl and add other ingredients. Mix until smooth like a brownie batter. Spread on a cookie sheet until it's evenly spread about 1/3 inch thick. Bake at 350 degrees for about 35 minutes. When it cools, cut into squares, or whatever shapes you prefer. Store the bow-wownies in an air tight container in the fridge.

Mint Cookies

Ingredients:

1 ½ C. Whole wheat flour
1 ½ C. Bisquick pancake mix
½ C. mint chopped leaves
¼ C. milk
4 T margarine
1 egg
1 ½ tsp corn syrup

Combine all the ingredients using a food processor, process the ingredients until they are well mixed, Roll out the dough onto a flat, floured surface. Roll the dough to be ¼ to ½ inch thick. Use cookie cutters to cut the cookies. Place the cookies on a non-stick cookie pan. Bake the cookies at 375 degrees for 20 minutes or until they are lightly browned. Allow the cookies to cool and store then in an air-tight container.

Beefy Birthday Cake

Ingredients:

1 ½ C. flour
1 ½ tsp baking powder
½ C. butter, softened
½ C. corn oil
1 jar strained beef
4 eggs
1 container of plain yogurt
2 strips dog beef jerky

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Grease and flour an 8x5x3 inch loaf pan. Cream the butter until it is smooth. Add the corn oil, baby food, and eggs. Mix until smooth. Now mix the dry ingredients into the beef mixture until the batter is smooth. Pour the batter into the loaf pan. Bake the cake for one hour and ten minutes. Allow the beefy birthday cake to cool for 15 minutes. Use yogurt as the icing on the cake and garnish the cake with jerky. Store the cake in the fridge until you are ready to serve it.

Always store the homemade dog treats in an air tight container in your fridge. You can keep homemade dog treats for up to one week before they start to go bad. If you aren't using all the dog treats within one week, you may consider reducing the amount of dog treats you make.

Apple Cinnamon Drops

Ingredients:

1 Large apple
¼ C. Honey
1 C. Oatmeal
½ C. Water
½ tsp. Cinnamon
1 ½ C. Whole wheat flour
1/8 C. Whole wheat flour

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Core, slice and mince the apple. In a large bowl, combine the minced apple, honey, water, cinnamon, and oatmeal. Slowly blend in the wheat flour, adding just enough to form a stiff dough. In a smaller bowl, add 1/8 C. wheat flour. Spoon the dough by rounded teaspoon onto ungreased baking sheets, spacing about 2 inches apart. Use the bottom of a glass dipped in wheat flour to prevent sticking, flatten each spoonful of dough into a circle. Adjust the size of the drops for your dog's preference. Bake treats for 30 minutes. Remove treats from oven and flip to cook on other side. Reduce oven temperature to 325 degree. Return treats to oven and cook for an additional 30 minutes. Allow treats to cool overnight. This recipe yields 3 dozen cookies.
