The Barking Dog

Are your neighbors fed up with your barking dog? Are you not getting enough sleep at night because you are kept awake by your barking dog? Some dogs will stop barking with a little bit of training, but there are other dogs that will not stop barking for anything! However, there are things that you can do with a dog that won't stop barking. Here are a couple of ideas:

1)Spray the dog in the face with a spray bottle: Some people have found that spraying water or lemon juice in the face of their dog is able to help the dog to stop barking. However, you need to be consistently spraying your dog in the face when they bark, so your dog will be able to realize that the spray will always be a consequence for barking. Soon, your dog will realize that barking will bring a spray in the face, and they will stop barking.

2)Buy a barking collar with citronella spray: One of the great things that you can do for a dog that won't stop barking is to buy a barking collar. One of the barking collars that is really popular comes with a citronella spray. Sensors on the collar are able to tell when the dog is barking, and a citronella spray will go up in the dog's face. This is a great option for people who don't have the time to spray their dog in the face on their own. In addition, citronella spray also often can bring about more dramatic results than getting sprayed in the face with water. The only downside to barking collars is that they can be relatively expensive – they usually are upwards of a hundred dollars.

3)Buy a barking collar that gives shocks: There are also barking collars that can give your dog a small shock each time that he barks. The louder and more consistent the barking, the stronger the shocks will be. However, these shocks are never strong enough to ever hurt the dog – it will just startle it instead. Many people feel like these shocking bark collars are more effective than the barking collars that spray citronella, but it also seems to be a matter of preference. These shocking collars can be a little bit more expensive than the citronella spray collars as well, so you will want to take that into consideration if you are looking to buy a barking collar.

4)Use a muzzle: Some people have found that muzzles are a helpful way to get your dog to stop barking. Muzzles are wrapped around the dog's mouth, so that it can't open its mouth to bark. This is often a great, inexpensive way to get your dog to stop barking. Muzzles are often anywhere from $10 to $20. It really depends on the muzzle company and the pet store. However, if you do use muzzles, there is one thing that you should take into consideration: dogs still can growl and whine with a muzzle on, and your dog might opt to make noise by whining or growling instead.

5)Sedation drugs: If you can't get your dog to calm down and stop barking, you also could consider giving your dog a type of sedation drug. However, you should only think about giving this to your dog as an absolute last result. In addition, you should also consult with your vet to see if drugs are the best option to get your dog to stop barking. Your vet will be able to tell if your dog is healthy enough to handle taking some type of medication.
