The Care And Feeding Of Rover

Just like people, dogs need to be fed on a regular basis! Feeding your dog is one of the prime responsibilities that you have as a dog owner. Your dogs probably are dependent on you for all of their food. There are a couple things that you need to know about feeding your dog.

• Get the right type of dog food: There are many different types of dog food that are available, and you will want to get the type of dog food that is best for your dog. You also will want to get a type of dog food that you can afford. The different types of dog food that are available at grocery stores are cheaper, but they are not the best type of dog food that you can get. Pet stores usually carry higher brands of dog food, such as Iams, Science Diet, and Eukanuba. You should check with your vet or dog breeder to find out what is the best type of dog food for your dog. Sometimes dogs with special medical conditions need to have a certain type of dog food. Also, check with your vet to see if your dog is overweight – there are also diet dog food options for overweight dogs.

• Give your dog the right portion: You should feed your dog the right amount of dog food each day. For this reason, it is a bad idea to get an automatic food dispenser, even though they are convenient. When you have an automatic food dispenser, you have no way of monitoring how much your dog is eating each day, and it could become overweight. Instead, you should either follow the directions that your vet gives you regarding feeding your dog or follow the measurements that are indicated on the back of your dog food bag. Usually dogs get about a cup's worth of dog food in the morning, and another cup's worth in the evening. However, the portion really depends on the size and weight of the dog.

• Don't feed too many dog treats: Dogs love to get biscuits and other types of treats, but you really need to moderate how much you feed your dog. Only give your dog a couple of biscuits each day. One of the worst things that you can give your dog is pig's ears. Although dogs love this treat, you really should only give your dog a pig's ear every once in a while. Think of it this way – you wouldn't feed yourself a large slice of chocolate cake every day, and you won't want to overkill your dog on treats either. It's just not healthy.

• Don't feed your dog table scraps: This is probably one of the biggest temptations for dog owners, but it is also one of the worst things that you can do. Even if it appears that your dog likes table scraps, you really shouldn't feed them to your dog. First of all, there are some things that human stomachs can handle that are very difficult for dog's stomachs to digest. In addition, table scraps can also spoil your dog so that he won't want to eat his dog food – and if that happens, then your dog won't be getting all of the nutrients and vitamins that he needs in his doggy diet! Don't feed your dog table scraps, and he'll be a happier and healthier dog!

These are some of the things that you need to do to feed your dog. In addition to feeding your dog every day, make sure that your dog always has a supply of fresh water on hand!
