Tips For Better Traveling With Your Dog or Pet
You probably know the basics of pet travel. Things like stopping for potty breaks, making sure your pet is secure in a carrier, feeding your pet, etc. are fairly elementary and hopefully you do not need anyone to tell you about the things that you should naturally know as a pet owner. However, there are some tips that you may not be aware of if you have never traveled with your pets or if you have done so previously but without success. Here are some tips that may be helpful to you as you prepare for your next vacation or travel excursion with your dogs and pets.
Did you know that animals can get carsick? It is true, animals can get car sick just like you or I. If your pet gets queasy in the car, try feeding him only a light meal a few hours before driving. As you drive continue to give small meals and for water give your pet ice cubes to drink to prevent him from guzzling down too much water. Some pets suffer from car sickness to the point where a veterinarian may need to give them a tranquilizer before traveling, but of course this should only be used as a last resort.
What's the harm in letting your pets put their head out of the window right? Unfortunately there are a lot of things that put your pet in danger if you allow for him to stick his head outside. Believe it or not, dogs have been accidentally strangulated when they have their head out of the window and they accidentally step on the electric window control. Furthermore the rush of cold air, pollutants, and bugs could give your pet an infection of the eyes, nose, windpipe or lungs.
You should be aware of the dangers of leaving a child alone in a car and hopefully you would never do such a thing. But too many people are still leaving their pets alone in the car. This is highly dangerous especially when it is hot outside. It only takes a few minutes in a hot car for a pet to lose consciousness and die of heat stroke. Never leave a pet unattended in the car.
Remember to exercise your pets. Pets are not satisfied with the occasional leg stretch on a long car ride. Generally speaking they need to have more physical stimulation than you or I would. Make sure that you have a leash close by and that you take a walk around the block every couple hours. Your pets will be much more comfortable if you do.
Pets and dogs especially, can have sensitive stomachs if too many new foods are introduced at once. Make sure that you bring food from home for your pets to eat and that if you are going to be traveling for a long time, that you gradually transition your pet from the food that he is used to, to the new food. This is especially true for water. Bring a gallon of water from home and gradually mix in water from the sites that you are visiting as the gallon becomes a little lower.
Keep in mind that your pets have different levels of comfort when it comes to temperature than do you or I. Furry animals get warm very quickly and because they cannot sweat, they have no way other than to drink water, of cooling down. In addition to making sure that your pets have enough to drink, monitor how comfortable they are with the temperature setting of the car. Most larger vehicles allow you to control the climate differently in different parts of the car.
