Tips For Breeding Big Dogs

Deciding to breed large dogs can start as a hobby that could lead into a small business that you and your family can run. People are always looking for pets bred in a good environment and that meet breed standards. If you do decide to breed a specific large dog, make sure that it is a dog that is in demand or you will find yourself with a property overrun with unwanted animals that will actually drain you financially instead of help you. Most people want pure breeds or a breed that is a carefully made mix.

Before throwing yourself into the breeding business, do some research to find what kind of dog is the best in your area to breed. Then take a look at what kind of dogs people are looking for. You will quickly find that people don't want random mutts, but rather dogs that are from a breed that is recognizable. Keeping within a breed standard will help keep any surprises from popping up about the dog. Breeds tend to share basic personality and character traits that breeders can count on their dogs having. These traits are what buyers are looking for.

Also, there is a process you need to go through to license yourself as a kennel breeder in your county. Doing the necessary paperwork will prevent legal issues that could arise in the future from unhappy customers that will try and make it look as though you were careless with the dogs you are breeding that led to their poor pet. If the city knows that you are licensed and have experience doing what you are doing, accusations such as these will pass without too many headaches and keep you in business.

When starting out your own breeding kennel, all you need is a pure bred female dog to start yourself out. Consider this your initial investment. After you have purchased your breeding mother dog, you need to find someone who owns a male dog that can help you start your business. You can just borrow someone's dog who would be willing to let you use it for starting your female dog's first litter. From here, hopefully you produce your own male dog that will do the job after it has grown. This subject is always a funny one when talking to breeders, but it is completely necessary and a normal way of going about things. You have to start somewhere!

Advertize your breeding kennel in the local paper, on breed web sites, and in local animal shelters. Try to think of places that animal owners would be and put your ad there. In your adds, make sure to state the kind of breed you have and that they are pure bred dogs that meet breed standards. Even put pictures of the little puppies in the ad, and that will attract people all on its own.

The truth behind breeding a specific kind of dog is that people love familiarity. People grow up with pets and become attached to a look and feel a dog has. If you can breed a dog that people have good feelings toward, your dogs will go to homes with people who will care for them because they remember what a good dog they can be. Dogs have been pets for thousands of years and will continue to be pets for a long time. Be a part of a growing community of dog lovers and help protect the breeds that people have grown to love. Make your breeding kennel one that people will always come to for high quality large dogs.
