All a small dog wants is the bare necessities, and then they are happy. Here are some of those bare necessities that will help you care for you small breed dog.
Small breed dogs love to go for walks and runs. The exercise they get comes from the time they spend playing with their owner. Make that time beneficial to you as well. Going to the park to run and play with your dog can be fun and a regular activity. Having games that you both like to play also makes the relationship between owner and dog a better one. People always get sucked into the idea that you have to go for a long boring walk every other day to exercise your small dog. While that is an option that works sometimes, it doesn"™t have to be the only way you do it. Make it interesting for the both of you. In the summertime, walk down to the dock and jump in for a swim. Swim around with your small dog and play fetch in the water! Or maybe there is a mountain trail near you that you can hike through. Don"™t be afraid to try new and fun activities.
Small breed dogs need to be groomed and cleaned regularly. Just because they are a dog doesn"™t mean they have to smell like one. Take them to a groomer every now and again so that they can have their hair cut and trimmed. They usually get doused in some nice perfumes that will make your little dog smell like a rose. It is important to groom your small dog regularly because it helps prevent insects and parasites from living on them. Every dog has different kind of hair. Find out what kind of brush your dog needs to have and use it every day on them. Besides brushing them every day, check their skin for ticks and fleas. If you do happen to find a tick, pull the tick out with a tweezers. Make sure to pull the whole thing out and that the head doesn"™t break off and stay in the dog. Sometimes it can make a dog sick. If your dog has fleas, the only way to get rid of them is to get a short haircut and then bathe them in soaps that have chemicals that kill the insects and the eggs still left on the skin of your dog. Nip that problem in the bud or you will find that the fleas will get onto you and even bite you.
Every so often a small dog can get eye infections from any number of things. There are products available that come in drops that you can use to help kill the infection. Failing to take care of these problems early can lead to more serious problems later on. Take the time to care for your small dog"™s medical needs on your own before spending the money on an expensive trip to the vet. While it is necessary sometimes to visit the vet, do not do it over small things that can be taken care of easily. Visiting the vet too often will leave a huge dent in your wallet.
Caring for your small dog should cover all of the different areas of living. Taking this responsibility seriously will produce a pet that will bring happiness into your life and the life of your pet.
