Traveling With Dogs And Pets
If you plan on traveling with your furry friends there are a couple of things that you need to know that will make the whole experience more pleasant for everyone. Additionally, you want to do everything that you can to ensure that the trip runs smoothly and that everyone remains safe. Unfortunately there are many pet owners who think of their pets only as afterthoughts when it comes to traveling. The result is an unhappy or ill pet and frustration for the owner. With some planning and considerate thinking, you may be surprised to find that your dog or pets enjoy getting out of the house just as much as you do.
Here are some things to remember when traveling with dogs and pets. If you have pets you know that they are in many ways like children. You should keep this in mind when you plan to travel. Pack for your pets so that they have toys and treats that they are familiar with. Make sure that you control your pet's temperature while you are in the car and never leave a pet alone in the car on a hot or even mildly warm day as their fur and the rapid rise in heat can both attribute to heat stroke and even death. Make sure that your pets get enough water and food to keep them happy. Consequently make sure that you are allowing your pets to have regular bathroom breaks to avoid any accidents in the car.
Pets, especially dogs, enjoy having a break every now and then where they can stretch their legs and exercise. Take your time and account for these breaks during your travels so that you do not become stressed about meeting a strict time schedule.
One very important thing to remember when traveling with dogs and pets is the issue of security. Your pets should not be allowed to roam free in the car. When the car is moving they need to be in a carrier that is secured to the bed of the truck or to a seat. Seatbelt safety applies to anyone who is in the car no matter their species. Hundreds of thousands of pets die each year because they were not secured while riding in the car.
Another threat to your dog's and pet's safety when in the car is the possibility that they might be able to get their paws on treats that could harm them. With everyone in such close proximity it is easy to let something like a nut or small toy roll under the seat and be made available to your pet. Know what sorts of foods your pet should not eat and avoid bringing those foods and anything that could be considered a choking hazard with you as you travel.
Plan ahead of time to know where you can stop to walk your dog and what hotels are pet-friendly. Hotels that allow for four-legged guests may be difficult to find although more and more hotels are making exceptions. Make sure that you call the pet-friendly hotel that you are planning to visit and make sure that there are no size requirements (as is often the case for pets) and that if there are restrictions you have taken care of them before hand so that you will not be denied a room once you reach your destination.
Help your dogs and pets have an enjoyable time on the road by keeping them as safe and comfortable as possible. After all, the last thing that you want is to have your travel plans interrupted by an unhappy pet.
