What Are Some Big Dog Breeds?

When people start shopping for a pet, they usually do a little research beforehand to get a grasp of what kind of animals are available as pets. The most common pet is none other than man's best friend himself, the dog. There are literally thousands of different mixes and breeds of dog that litter the world. Some are pure breeds, bred with the finest genes that two parent dogs can provide, and some are cute little mutts who have a little bit of everything from the k-nine gene pool. When choosing a dog, you can usually split the kind of breed into two size categories: large and small. Big dogs are large and strong and are known to be playful by nature. They eat a lot of food and can really put a lot of wear and tear into their environment. These dogs have a keen sense of loyalty to their owners and have been known to do spectacular things for them. If you don't know anything about dogs, you may be asking yourself right now, "what are big dog breeds?

Wolfdog.

There are definitely many more breeds out there that are not listed, but to know more about those you need to first understand a little of why we have large breed dogs to begin with.

First of all, dogs are direct relatives genetically with the Wolf. Somewhere along the line, man was able to make a wolf his pet and train it to do tasks. The bones of dogs have been found side by side with the remains of humans that date back thousands of years. The Pharaohs of Egypt that have been uncovered have been found to have had their own personal dogs buried with them so that they could enjoy them in the after world. The dog morphed into a creature that was dependable and easily handled by people and could be a useful member of a family.

Large dogs are sought after because of their size, strength, and brains. The sheep dog, for example, can help a shepherd round up his sheep and keep them in their herds. The dog can analyze the situation and run to where it needs to go to keep the sheep in line. Big dogs are also trained so that they can assist the disabled such as with seeing eye dogs. Like the sheep dog, seeing eye dogs can walk a person around a large city and keep them safe from all manner of dangers. The police use big German Shepherds to sniff for drugs and to pursue runaways or fugitives from the law. Because of the dogs' keen intelligence and ability to learn, they can also be taught to be obedient. They can listen to commands and read emotions just like a person can with another.

Big dogs are fun to have if you have the space and the time to make them a part of your life. These dogs form ties with their owners that when broken, such as giving the dog to another family, is extremely difficult for them to take because they are extremely loyal and think of themselves as members of your pack. If you are going to get a dog, make sure that you can keep and care for them so that they can live full healthy lives with you and your family.
