What Is The Ugliest Dog Breed?

Ugly is a matter of opinion, yet there are contests held all year long for what the ugliest dog breeds are, and there are some clear winners.

In answer to the question of what are the ugliest dog breeds, we would have to say, the Bull Mastiff, Sharpei, Chinese Crested, Pug, and Mutts.

Let's take a look at the history of one of the ugliest dog breeds in the world, the Chinese Crested.

Chinese Crested dogs have held the title as the world's ugliest dog more than once but this is more than just an ugly mutt. It is believed they originated in Africa. They are thought to have been bred with the African hairless dog, as well as other hairless dogs to create this breed. From Africa, they were brought to China by traders. They were used on boats to catch rats and mice. The hairless breed was chosen to be on the boats because it was believed they did not have fleas. The Chinese Crested breed of dog has been in China since the thirteenth century. There were two distinct species of the Chinese Crested breed during the reign of the Han Dynasty. There was a "treasure house guardian and the other, which was built heavier and was used for food. Aboard Chinese sailing ships, they found their way through trade routes and into Europe and South America.

Some people believe the Chinese Crested resulted from the mating of the Mexican Hairless dog and a Chihuahua, while others believe the Chihuahua may have come from the Chinese Crested. Up to this point, their exact origin is not proven. They did not appear until 1960 in the United States. It is said that until 1966 the only remaining Chinese Crested dogs in the entire world belonged to an elderly woman living in the United States. Whether that is true or not, the Chinese Crested have been revived thanks to committed breeders. In 1991, after a century of waiting, this breed was recognized by the AKC.

There are two types of Chinese Crested, one is the hairless with small amounts of hair only on the head, tail and feet, and the Powderpuff, which is completely covered with hair. The Chinese Crested is a graceful dog who is a good companion. They are playful, entertaining, and friendly. They are devoted to their owners and very much enjoy the company of humans. The Chinese Crested is a friendly, family dog and is not aggressive towards children or other animals. They are known for their "hugging of toys, food, and even people. The Chinese Crested have the ability to cling to toys, food and people with their toes, which looks like they are "hugging with their toes. Many times the breeding of a hairless dog to a hairless dog results in toenail and teeth abnormalities. That is why it is better to breed a hairless dog to Powderpuff which may be more healthy.

The Chinese Crested is a very low maintenance breed because they are odorless and often times hairless. Powderpuff types require weekly grooming but the hairless Chinese Crested need only skin massaging with cream on a regular basis. The hairless type in hot weather may become sticky and dirty as they perspire and should not be left in the bright sun because their skin may burn. During the winter months the hairless Chinese Crested must be kept warm. Both Chinese Crested types need minimal exercise. They are not highly active but still need a good romp or short walk regularly. Chinese Crested dogs are toy dogs often used as lap dogs. They are very intelligent and have average trainability. Using food during training may be better because they love to eat. The best owner for the Chinese Crested would be an individual or family that live in a home or apartment. They are not an outdoor or kennel dog. Due to their lack of fur, they do not do well in extreme hot or cold weather conditions and require protection during these types of conditions.
