What To Do When You Lose A Pet

Losing a pet can be a very traumatic experience especially for children. This trauma can be amplified if your pet dies as a result of an accident or sudden onset of illness. There are also unique challenges associated with pet owners who make the difficult decision to euthanize their pet in order to relieve them of severe pain or discomfort.

The first thing that you need to do when you lose a pet is decide what you will do with the remains of your pet. Most pet owners with large animals choose to have them cremated. Cremation and other burial preparation services range in availability, animal specialization, and price. Your local veterinary clinic should have information on what of all these services are offered locally.

It is easy to get caught up in the business portions of dealing with the loss of a pet. There are arrangements to be made and others that may need comforting. These factors often leave individuals without time to sort out their own emotions and handle any personal grief that they may be experiencing.

The next thing, and some would argue the most important thing, that you will need to do after losing a pet is to consider ways that you will deal with the death of that pet. Many people feel very alone in their grief over the death of their pet because they feel like no one will understand how deep their bond with their pet was. Insensitive or naïve individuals who do not share the same love for animals or bond with a personal pet may not understand how much like a family member a pet can actually become. If you are in a situation where you feel like there are few people who understand your position, there are plenty of ways to find compassionate help. Pet grief/loss help lines are common services offered by universities where veterinary science is studied. Additionally, the Internet can provide you with access to chat with many people who also have pets and who may even be going through the grieving process at the same time as you. Such services are free and confidential so there is no need to be concerned about any critics.

A funeral or memorial service is a common thing that those who have just lost a pet find very comforting. Saying "goodbye" to your pet and remembering the good times that you and your pet shared together is a good way to bring closure to the grieving process. Focusing on the pleasant memories also helps to soften the pain of not being able to see your pet everyday as you once did.

Religion and religious principles regarding death and an after life become very important at this time. One's religious belief that they will see their pet again some day or that their pet has gone to a better place and where he is happy and free from pain, makes dealing with their death easier. Children also receive a lot of peace by knowing that their pet has gone to live in heaven. Turning to a trusted religious leader for counsel may also be helpful as your religious leader may know information about you personally that would help for him or her to know how to best help you.

The conclusion is that there are some technical things that will need to be done when there is the death of a pet. But ultimately, it is the process of dealing with the loss or grief that one feels that becomes the most important element to take care of. Losing a pet is a sad thing, but with the help of others you do not have to be sad for too long.
