What to Feed A Puppy

Have you just gotten a puppy and now you want to know what to feed the puppy? There are so many choices out there it is hard to know what is right for your puppy. You want your puppy to get the nutrients that he or she needs to be a happy, healthy and active puppy so that he or she can grow into a happy, healthy dog.

When you think of what to feed your puppy don't just think of the dog food. When, how and what you feed your puppy will all have an effect on your puppy's happiness. If you just got your puppy it is usually a good idea to use the same dog food and schedule that your puppy was used to before he or she came to you. If you want to switch your puppy's food or schedule, do it slowly. Take about seven to ten days to get your puppy on the new schedule and food. Start out by adding a little of the new food and then work your way up to feeding only the puppy food you want to feed you puppy.

When choosing what to feed your puppy, you should know what not to feed your puppy. The choice to feed your puppy canned dog food needs to be considered carefully. Canned food will most likely have higher calories and is mostly water. Canned food will also cost more, but this doesn't mean it is better. Canned food will also not give your puppy the chance to get his or her teeth clean.

Another food not to feed your puppy is table scraps. This may seem a waste for some. You have a dog so that your scraps aren't wasted, especially if you have kids. But table scraps do not offer a balanced diet for puppies. The table scraps will also not give your puppy the vitamins and minerals that he or she needs to stay healthy and strong. Feeding your puppy table scraps can also lead to eating off the table problems if you have an indoor puppy.

Dry food is what you need to feed your puppy. There are many advantages to feeding your puppy dry food. The dry food has fewer calories and has a lot less water. Dry dog or puppy food is better for your puppy's teeth as well as their digestive system. Dry puppy food will also help regulate the weight gain you want or don't want for your puppy.

There are many brands of puppy food to choose from. A typical rule is you get what you pay for. Puppies will need smaller chunks of food to chew on, but other than that buy what your pocket book can afford and remember that if your puppy isn't eating as good as he or she used to the food may not taste as good.

Water is a major need when it comes to what to feed your puppy. Your puppy will need to have access to a lot of water throughout the day. Puppies are very active and they need to replenish their body with a lot of water. Water is a very important nutrient for your puppy.

So now on to treats. Treats are a great way to help train a puppy, but they should not take up more than ten per cent of your puppy's calorie intake. Keep in mind that smaller breeds will need less calories, so break up the treat if you need to. Another type of treat is a rawhide bone. This chewy treat can be beneficial to your puppy's teeth. It will also not harm your puppy in any way.

If you are concerned about how much to feed your puppy it may be a good idea to talk to your vet. The back of a dog food bag does have a suggested serving amount, but this is a general rule of thumb and will not apply to most puppies.

So as you look at what to feed your puppy, keep in mind that you probably won't want to feed canned dog food or table scraps. Dry dog food is the best and for puppies a smaller size of dog food is helpful. Keep treats to a minimum and rawhide bones are a great way to help keep your puppy's teeth clean. Never leave your puppy in need of water; they need a lot of water.
