Large dogs come with their own specific needs that should be recognized by potential pet owners. Failure to understand the needs of your large dog can have a truly unhappy result. · How big do you want? One of the first questions a potential large dog owner should ask themselves is how big do they want their new dog to be? There are approximately 200 breeds of dogs that come in all shapes, colors and sizes. Each was bred for specific traits that appeal to the humans in control of their breeding. While most large breeds are considered to be over 50 pounds many people assume that even dogs in the 35-50 pound range are fairly large. Researching online and talking to established vets and dog breeders can give you a good idea of the true size of your desired breed. This kind of responsible choice entails a lifetime responsibility, as you will commit yourself to loving and caring for this animal for ten years or more.
· What traits do you want? Once you have narrowed down your search on large breed dogs now is the time to research the type of traits you want in your dog. Many large dogs are bred to be hunting dogs. Even if you do not enjoy that type of activity these dogs can make great outdoor dogs who enjoy being outdoors with their owners. But if you are also a household with other pets this type of large breed dog may not be a good fit. Large dogs can consume an enormous amount of food putting strain on the pet owner both financially and physically as they work to keep the dog stocked with food. In addition most vet charges go higher as the animal get large. Should a large breed dog become sick or injured the cost to bring the dog back to health can be prohibitive. In addition many large dog breeds require professional grooming. Should you pick a breed that does you need to be prepared for this additional cost as well.
· Do you have children? While many large breed dogs can become devoted family members who love children some breeds are bred to just be to aggressive to be around children. Researching your chosen dog breed can give you an insight as to whether this will be a problem. It is important to keep in mind as well that many large breed dogs become better family dogs when raised from a puppy. Adopting an older dog can be a rewarding experience but many large breed older dogs are set in their ways and may not be accepting of the advances of well meaning children.
